I’ve found recently that writing or at least attempting to write something ‘good’ is a mixture of talent, ambition, drive, and balance. Too often have I let the tides of life dishevel my attempts at writing producing nothing, but regrets. In order to indulge in this lifestyle I so want there are several things I need to do:
- Read daily. The only practice for writing is reading and writing yourself. Without indulging in one is like a musician who has never listened to music.
- Pay forth to the community. This isn’t competition and the writing community needs to support itself. Don’t pirate e-books, purchase them. Try out Indie zines (you’d be surprised) and get to know those around you.
- On that same note get involved in the community, I attended AWP, but I’ve fallen behind in my internet forums- lots of great writers to meet.
- Persistence. Sometimes the words just won’t flow, but that doesn’t mean the brain can’t be picked. With the thousands of prompts and online activities there is no excuse for writer’s block.
Well everything requires a balance and perhaps by keeping my priorities in check I can succeed in this literary game.
